5C Network: A Socio-Technical Approach to Building Data Moats

Indian health-tech startups, striving to build AI-based products, are often stumped by their limited access to relevant medical data. Most commercial and open-source datasets originate from Western archives based on medical studies conducted on the Caucasian male, who, for the longest time, represented the whole of humanity. Furthermore, unverified third-party datasets are riddled with obsolescence, incorrect annotations, and duplication, raising concerns about their reliability and safety in deployment. Especially in healthcare, where errors can be fatal.

5C Network, a Bengaluru-based teleradiology service provider, founded by Kalyan Sivasailam and Syed Ahmed, prioritised collecting proprietary data from the onset. The duo also emphasised creating strong foundations for training and deployment, which has provided them with credibility and a data moat.

This case study examines 5C Network through a Socio-Technical lens and highlights three key considerations for aspiring founders in the ecosystem.
